Southern Candied Yams

These candied yams are one of my favorite Thanksgiving sides. They’re sweet, buttery, and full of warm spices — the kind of comfort food that brings everyone back for seconds. Simple ingredients, big flavor.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 large sweet potatoes yams, peeled and sliced into thick rounds
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 stick ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Optional 1–2 tbsp orange juice for brightness

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Arrange sliced yams in a baking dish.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir to combine.
  4. Pour the syrup mixture evenly over the yams.
  5. Cover tightly with foil and bake 30 minutes.
  6. Remove foil and bake an additional 15–20 minutes, basting occasionally until tender and glossy.
  7. Serve warm with the syrup spooned over the top.
